Port Perry students roll with Project of Heart for 3rd year running

Native Studies and Native Arts students at Port Perry High School recently participated in Project of Heart — for the 3rd year in a row! Seasoned Native Studies and History teacher, Nancy Hamer-Strahl, brought students through the learning module by commemorating the students from Stirland Lake (Ontario), Crystal Bay (Manitoba) and Battleford Industrial School (Saskatchewan).

As can be seen below this post, Nancy sent along a sample of her students’ reflections – letters to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, the final resting place of the tiles the students have so painstakingly decorated:

The following is a link to the CBC documentary “8th Fire”. Hamer-Strahl’s Native Studies class is featured in the second episode (It’s Time)

Project of Heart wants to thank Nancy and her students for taking up the challenge of learning our hidden history, and taking action to change that history. Meegwetch!
