“Project of Art”: Port Perry High School student decorates entire IRS tile kit

It’s never been done before, but a talented high school student from Ontario has completed the remarkable feat of decorating the commemorative tiles for an entire Indian Residential School all by himself. Most students working on Project of Heart are given a set of 10 tiles to decorate, but, as reported by Port Perry’s High School Newsletter, “Jake Robinson was so inspired by this project that he has taken on the job to commemorate 200 children on his own, during his free time. Nine schools in Durham board join Project of Heart

Under the leadership of Native Studies teacher, Nancy Hamer-Strahl, last year Port Perry High School in the Durham District School Board (DDSB) participated in Project of Heart.

Nancy recognized the initiative provided an excellent way for students to respond in a meaningful way to the emotions they were feeling as a result of learning about the tragic loss of children’s lives due to the Indian Residential Schools. Spanish Girls School remembered by Port Perry

This past semester, my Current Aboriginal Issues class was privileged to meet Larry Loyie, author and residential school survivor. His story changed the lives of my students and they felt they wanted to do something for the survivors and for those who never made it back home. CBC Cameras come to Port Perry for Project of Heart

The CBC was at Port Perry High Schools Thursday, March 24th and June 3rd 2011. They came to film our Grade 12 French Immersion History class and the Grade 10 Canadian History class participating in Project of Heart. The CBC was very interested in the work the student had produced.
